Odor Pays Step 0 Detection Development (Dog and Handler): This 6-lesson video package provides comprehensive guidance on preparing dogs to become detection dogs before introducing odor. Whether you’re starting with a new dog or seeking to refine fundamental skills in an experienced detection dog, these lessons offer valuable insights. With 21 hours of classroom instruction from experts Michael Ellis, Cameron Ford, and Natalie Morris, along with practical demonstrations, you’ll learn everything involved in developing both dogs and improving handler communication skills for detection work. These lessons are designed for all types of detection dog teams, from professional handlers to sport detection enthusiasts.  *Note this is the same information we provide our students who attend our in person Detection Dog Training Class at Ford K9 / MES.

Lesson 1 Markers Food and Movements

In this lesson Michael Ellis covers Markers and then we get into use of Food reward and how to engage with use of Marker then food delivery. These are the building blocks for the additional lessons.

Lesson 2 Motivation and Rewards

In Lesson 2, Michael will explore different aspects of motivation, including the use of food and other benefits as rewards. He will demonstrate various techniques for delivering food rewards, focusing on movement and placement strategies. The lesson will include practical drills to illustrate the how and why behind effective food reward delivery.

Lesson 3 Play Mechanics

In Lesson 3 Michael and Ford K9 cover the importance of communication how to develop proper play techniques and incorporating Markers and reward sequences for developing your detection dog.

Lesson 4 Rewarding Sequence and Mechanics for odor

Lesson 4 Michael Ellis and Cameron and Natalie cover creating communication (markers) for rewarding at source and rewarding at handler. Michael will cover pros and cons of each method and students will conduct practical drills for you to view and learn the important considerations when establishing reward sequences and what you are marking for when you finally start Step 1 of the Ford K9 Odor Pays system.

Lesson 5 Search Development

Lesson 5 In this section, we will explore straightforward and effective methods to enhance search skills in dogs before introducing odor training. These techniques are applicable to both puppies and adult dogs, and they help handlers learn to read their dogs as they work towards finding a primary reward item. This skill is developed through a progression tailored to each dog’s individual needs and skill level.

Lesson 6 Detection Tools and Equipment plus Odor Hygiene

Lesson 6 will cover the essential tools and equipment needed to start training your detection dog. This lesson also includes recommended practices for keeping your odors clean and minimizing contamination. Attached list with sources for equipment.
